Marlin 1894 serial number - date

I just inherited a nice Marlin model 1894. I found a link to find the date of manufacture but when I put in the 4 digit serial number 14XX the date comes up 1882. How could a model 1894 be made in 1882? I would like to date this rifle as I am interested in trading for a Colt 1911. Any and all help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.
